In other words, they needed the arms of a caring mother, or surrogate mother, to survive the first two years of life!
A newborn given for adoption needs the maternal attention of a caring woman if it is to live! No man can replace her in this essential function even if he gives the baby all the affection of a real father!
The first five years should include a full time mother! If this is not possible, a loving grandmother could well do the job!

@Agatha NOPE, two dads do not a mother make during these first 3 or 4 years of a new life! Science has it confirmed and the lack of a woman makes for serious consequences!

They would not be gentle, nor words of encouragement to continue this way of thinking.
@Krysdammit You should learn how to read properly as I never said father's love is unnecessary or harmful; the first 3 years of life must be covered by a woman AND a man, of course, if possible, but a man can NEVER replace a Mother during these crucial years!!!

A loving parent of any gender is beneficial. It doesn't need to be a mother. Plenty of children are thriving in families with 2 dads. Dads shouldn't put it all on the mom to fill that role.
