My grandfather on my mother's side came over from Italy by himself in 1901. He was 13. He worked at a steel mill. He fought in WWI for the US. He couldn't speak English and couldn't read or write either language.
After the war, he settled in a suburb of Boston and married a war widow who had 3 boys and a girl. They added two boys to the mix.
The boys worked hard during the Depression. My grandfather sold fruits and vegetables out of a horse-drawn wagon...
(That was America)
