staccato splatter
the syncopated lullaby
of rain on the roof

I am an incorrigible fidgeter when it comes to campfires. Between watching the flames and tending them, I don't think about much else.

the campfire consumes
my attention and my cares
along with the wood

summer's red result;
hard work's slow, well-earned reward:
that first tomato

Funny thing is a family was packing out of a neighboring cabin, and they didn't even notice him galumph along...

anxiously crossing
all awkward adolescence
long-legged young bear

3rd flush of golden oysters from this block.

unlikely bouquet
golden crinkles curl towards
their electric sun

I always wonder what they're saying... (I sometimes suspect it's like that Far Side cartoon, where it turns out all animal calls are just the equivalent of "hey, baby..." 😆.)

the squirrel broadcasts
its staccato chitter
a morse code all its own

I wish I knew more about plant identification. One of these days...

nodding, slow and sage
the wildflower needs no name
to know its nature

garden inspector:
electric blue dragonfly
hovers in the heat

faint light, fading fast,
lonely beacons of summer:
mid-July fireflies

reminder & reward,
the reason it's all worthwhile:
summer tomatoes

oddly relaxing
to watch someone work so hard
bustling bumblebee

distant slate blue line
surges, swirls to windy grays
summer evening storm

Facebook reminded me that several years ago at this time, I saw U2 in concert. I got there early, so I had a tiny tailgate, party of 1.

hatchback open,
a picnic dinner, a good book:
introvert’s tailgate

unexpected guest
your visit quick as your wings
summer hummingbird

full, closed summer buds,
color peeking through the edge:
anticipation

a baleful orange sun
sets in the smokey haze
quiet, and disquiet

I take it as an odd sort of compliment when the turtles don't dive off their logs and flee as I drift by in a kayak.

tolerant turtle
sunning in parallel
on our respective craft

I did a double take when I passed this while kayaking. Not sure what it was, but it sure was making the best of the situation...

from the rotting log
a stranded sprout sways in the bay
life finds a way

unexpected guest
is it time again so soon?
summer's first firefly

slow Middle River
soggy sandals, a soothed soul
summer paddle board
