Many don't know it or remember, but in many of John Wayne's early films, horse stunts and other stunts were performed by Yakima Canutt. Canutt revolutionised the stunt profession, and besides coming up with new and exciting techniques still used now, he also made the profession safer by revising much of what had existed before. He appeared, not only as a stunt person, but also as an actor in most of Wayne's early westerns.
