These types of comments negate any "apology" that follows. It shows they aren't taking any responsibility for their actions. It's like putting "but" after "I'm sorry".
@Agatha There's really no difference in these 'belated' statements than saying 'your Honor, I wasn't raised this way, my actions don't define me, true, I am a serial killer, but that's not how I really am'. I mean, sorry/not sorry or what!
