PSA for anybody who cares: “triggered” doesn’t mean “offended”. It’s a clinical term. When someone like a PTSD sufferer is triggered, they’re not likely to be able to type a social media reply.

The way it’s used on social media (and WaPo headline writers) is ableist and leads to misunderstandings that harm PTSD sufferers and others.

“Trigger warnings” are not there to avoid offending people who are “overly sensitive”. They’re used to help vulnerable people avoid severe mental distress.
