@FrankCannon

Hawkeโ€™s skill was pragmatic populism. He was a union man through and through, who realised that he lived in a conservative - and racist - nation and rejected it but knew how to play it.

We have universal Medicare and employer-paid compulsory superannuation because of him

We also have the beer Iโ€™m drinking.

Yeah, there were some good ones here in AUS too (although I have to admit they there have always been a few corrupt ones around them).

Bob Hawke was pretty good, and I liked the way PM Julia Gillard managed her minority government under duress.

They tend to work more for the people in minority governments, and the Labor ones have always been more open to it, but that optionโ€™s not available to American friends ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿผโ€โ™‚๏ธ

@FrankCannon

I agree 100% and would urge all non -US countries to act immediately.

But they wonโ€™t. Because their Parliaments make the laws, and they donโ€™t make that corrupt behaviour illegal. And they take sweet stuff from the lobbyists and say itโ€™s not wrong because itโ€™s legal.

In the USA, itโ€™s Citizens United vs FEC in which the appointed-for-life SCOTUS led by John Roberts decided that money=speech, thereby enshrining the power of wealth.

The fix is in.

Itโ€™s genuinely hard to argue that the US government has not just been bought by oligarchs, when Elon funded the campaign and Peter Thiellโ€™s man is now a cheeseburger-loaded heartbeat away.

Heโ€™s a science teacher and jokes that he knew it was coming decades ago and it was why he bought a house on a hill. Heโ€™s always been a staunch advocate for CO2 reduction . Used to argue with my dad (who worked for an oil company) as far back as the 80s.

Especially when they let Bobby Jr take the fluoride out of the water and ban vaccines.

My uncle in NFLD is livid but glad he lives on an island.

@InUnfunky

Yes indeedy!

Every TV performance should henceforth have the option to select this kind of angle.

@raspberrypanda

They can just recycle the 'NO' case that the Coalition and their Murdoch masters used in our referendum to recognise an Indigenous Voice to Parliament last year.

The proposition was as close to the least we could possibly do as you could get without actually doing nothing, but they demagogued against it with all the racism they could manage without actually reverting to 50s-style racist language. They got what they wanted, though ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

It was disgusting, IMHO.

@raspberrypanda

Yeah, seeing the back of those blokes would at least make the pain mean something ๐Ÿคž๐Ÿคž

Sadly, I fear that it'll only help our Liberal/National coalition that started out conservative enough but is now racing off to the right-most horizon as fast as they can, and I don't think the current PM is up to the fight that'll be needed to fend them off next year. ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

@singlemaltgirl

๐Ÿ˜‚ you get used to it over about 43 years or so. I couldnโ€™t even imagine getting about in the Montreal winters of my first 10 years now.
