@DyDave My cats do similar things. My guess is they need to know their human is there, ready to care for them when the need arises. It's a comforting, stress reduction behavior. It's also a signal of how important you are to your cat, like a small child sees its parent.
Yeah, they seem to like take a posture to protect the people the like, and are happy to face away but stay in contact. Funny ol things 🤷🏼♂️
