One thing that's always left me curious. Here in Barbados if a storm is approaching, when it's close enough our Light & Power company turns off the electricity (although many of us turn off our breaker main ourselves even before that happens,
In the US, it seems the electricity is left on until lightning or falling trees cause it to go off. Why is it left on when the storm is actually upon the area?

Not a bad idea. I'd be curious what checks they do to determine when it's safe to turn it up again.

@Sr0bi I'm just guessing but I would think when the official All Clear is given by Government Emergency/Disaster Management

But for giving the all clear, they probably wouldn't wait to find out if all downed power lines have been dealt with, right? Or can they?
