Choosing a server seems to be somewhat of a personal choice for some, based on the server's intended audience (LGBT, tech, academia, OSS, etc.) But IMO, it doesn't matter too much. You can cross-follow other people on other servers*, and you can 'migrate' to a different server (and keep your followers/follows) if you wish.

*Sometimes I find following people on other servers to be a bit of a hassle. YMMV.

@DaveMasonDotMe @Pmpjr @ay counter.social is a bit of an exception here. AFAIK it isn't federated and is its own little island. I'm on techhub.social and it seems to work better, in addition to being federated (so I can connect to people on other servers)
