The D.C. Metro system is planning a return to self-piloting trains in coming months, 15 years after automated trains were turned off in the wake of a crash on the Red Line that killed a train operator and eight passengers.

Though officials later determined that the disaster had nothing to do with automatic train operation, it set off years of crisis and disruption within Metro.
