ATO allowed for trains to be operated automatically by computer systems without the need for manual intervention by operators. However, the DC Metro gradually moved away from full ATO operation due to a series of safety concerns and incidents. The fatal collision between two trains in 2009 on the Red Line highlighted some of the vulnerabilities of the ATO system, including difficulties with emergency braking and communication between trains and the operations center.
