My coworker hates heavy metal and punk because she believes it’s “angry”. Well it is. Anger and every other emotion a human can feel. Because it’s Art. 1/

The most globally important piece of art in the entire country of Canada is a northern Renaissance masterpiece by Rubens. I’ve seen it and it fantastic! 2/

That painting is called the “massacre of the innocents”, painted in 1610, and it depicts part of the murder of all the newborns in Bethlehem by Herod the Great in response to the birth of Jesus Christ 3/

In high school English class in Canada, we learned about ‘Subject’, ‘Topic’, and ‘Theme’. The subject is a biblical incident, the topic is violence, and the theme is either religion or death. 4/

But would a reasonable person see this painting and even look at the other viewers and cackle “must really love baby murder! Haha what a laugh haha must hate babies!”? No. Nobody sane would. 5/

This thing is with art is that it’s done with intention. There is good and bad art, Pop Music is done as art as well. What we must do as auditors is champion ideals of art, interrogate and criticize art, we must separate art from non-art and say so. The part that is subjective about art is when we critically disagree about content, not whether or not it IS. 6/

Anyways, Heavy Metal music is actually the longest lasting “Pop” genre ever. Look it up. Rock N Roll is here to stay, it’s our favourite, and someone will paint a bunch more murder paintings and some of those will be considered the greatest things ever devised, just like metal and punk, and just like I hope the tastes of my naggy coworker are too. It’s a whole world, gang /end

@Chriskorvela
It's incredible to me that some ppl don't get that listening to "angry" music can be cathartic.
These are probably the same ppl who have "break-up" playlists. 😂 It's the same reason that we have "Requiems" played during funeral services.
It's a hard no from me for those over-blown stadium filling ballads. When I hear them I immediately put on some angry, aggressive, metal. Wonder what that says about moi?🤔 😂
Aggressive music does not make one go out and do bad things.😉 😎 👍

@Krysdammit yeah! It’s like I said: I’m appreciating Art by Artists. The mien of that art might be angry, but I’m not angry - I’m having a great time listening to something great! Last summer, I met At The Gates totally by accident. We were on a patio on the block outside the very show they were about to play. We didn’t know it was them, but they seemed like perfectly normal busy people haha.

@Chriskorvela
They are new-to-me. tyvm for the intro. Listening to "Blinded by Fear" now. I'm sure that they're normal people in rl because they get all of that out on stage, where it belongs.😉 So cool that you got to meet them.
Don't know whether you're into reaction channels, found them during lock-downs & still enjoy them. this fellow likes annalizing the heavier stuff, live performances. He used to be in a band himself.
Here he's reacting to my fav band.

@Krysdammit The big bands in Scandivnavia who were basically the equivalent of American big 4 thrash metal were Unleashed, Dismember, Entombed, and Grave. EXCEPT I would propose because of the length of time and their overall worldwide success, it must include At The Gates and In Flames. For me though, I love Grave, but the Scandinavian parallel to “Grunge” called D-Beat is the best stuff I think right now 🤘

@Chriskorvela
Thak you very much for telling me about them Chris. Now I have to check them all out!🤟
