As for the Muslims, their interest is based on "Al-Aqsa"; the name of a site from which Muhammad supposedly journeyed by night to heaven on a fabulous bird-animal.

But neither the site of Al-Aqsa, nor the fabulous bird, nor the flight to heaven, ever happened. It's all fiction. The Muslims who conquered Jerusalem later in the 7th century decided to choose the Temple Mount as "Al-Aqsa," but there was no legitimate basis for this claim.

It's an interesting fact that both Christian and Muslim interest in what they call "the Holy Land" is based on fictions and fabrications.

The Christian interest is centered on the "Holy Sepulchre," a church complex that supposedly covers both the site of Jesus' crucifixion and his burial.

I'm not particularly bothered by people believing in the fictions of their choice–most people believe in some fiction or other–but only so long as that fiction remains relevant to them personally and only affects how they live their lives, hopefully for the better.
