Catholic Monarchs used the Spanish Inquisition to 'purify' Spain and its faith. Thousands of Jews and others who didn't convert & pledge allegiance to catholicism were executed & their possessions taken by the crown.

In Germany, rhetoric and ignorance (whether willful or unconscious), laid the grounds for Hitler’s rise. People ignored hitler’s hateful rhetoric because they were enveloped in economic & national promises.
