I think what Americans want is an economy where they don't struggle to survive and stay afloat, while someone shows them numbers about how big the economy is for wealthy people under whichever president is trying to get a pat on the back.
What you've presented is a logical fallacy that appears to be an unholy hybrid of straw man and false dichotomy.
Happens to everyone. But it's still a bad argument.
