I ran across this on tumblr and suddenly I was reminded that K Mart was the home of the original "Blue Light Special". They actually had a Blue light on a pole, with a siren, that would appear somewhere in the store and for the next few minutes whatever was at where the blue light was would be on sale.

@Animeraider Diners traditionally have a Blue Plate Special, and Kmart's cafe also had one. I wonder if the Blue Light Special was derivative of Blue Plate Specials.
