It's been many years since I heard "Gimme Hope Joanna." It's fun anyone else remembers it.
I've never heard of the original song. I listened to it just now and love it. I saw that it was popular in 1989. I was working in Lima, South America then so that's probably why I never heard of it.

Here's the video for those who aren't familiar. It was written during Apartheid. "Joanna" refers to Johannesburg, one of the two capital cities of South Africa.
