I was talking to an American ex-pat living in Hong Kong and asked about the Chinese government social repression. I was surprised at how little importance he gave to it.

Then it occurred to me that people in Hong Kong must talk about Americans who have to be afraid of being mowed down by bullets any time they leave their homes, and they probably wonder how we tolerate such a system of non-governmental social repression.
