Wildebeest is a new project from Cloudflare that’s designed to make it easier for individuals to set up and run their own Mastodon-compatible servers(takes MINUTES to connect to fediverse)
Today we're introducing Wildebeest, an open-source, easy-to-deploy ActivityPub and Mastodon-compatible server built entirely on top of Cloudflare's Supercloud.

While Cloudflare is attempting to make the technical side of running a Mastodon instance easier, being responsible for even a small pocket of social media users can create some big non-technical challenges, which FT Alphaville outlined when it shut down its own Mastodon server last month.
"We tried to run a social media site and it was awful
Extinction looms for FTAV’s Mastodon presence!

"Mastodon administrators have access to everyone’s DMs by default. FTAV has no interest in sliding uninvited into anyone’s DMs and the best way to prove it is to remove all opportunity"
Mastodon uses basic encryption to protect direct messages between users, but not end-to-end encryption
Mastodon itself pops up a warning when creating direct messages that explicitly states that posts are not end-to-end encrypted and that you shouldn't share any sensitive information using the service
OH DEAR. THIS POST WAS SET TO SELF-DETONATE 💣 💥 🔥
