I literally just started last week. So far I've only done vegetable rolls and California rolls. Tomorrow afternoon I hope to hit the fish market so I can make some proper nigiri.

There are a few items I learned quite quickly are pretty essential, and fortunately I found cheap but decent quality versions of them. Rice cooker, hangiri bowl, yanagiba knife, etc. I also had a friend who recently got into sushi making and they were able to recommend good rice and nori sheets.

YouTube is a great resource of this for most things. For example, many people toss a piece of kombu in their rice cooker, but Morimoto boils it in his vinegar dressing for the rice. So I do both, because whoever complained about too much umami?

There's nothing "cheating" about poke, it's just the Hawaii-fied version of chirashi.
