this is the audio equivalent of “my daddy bought me a brand new Ferrari when i turned 16…”

“I've hooked it all up, the turn table (linn sondek lp12) to the pre amp which is an audio research sp9 pre amp to the matching ls1 audio research stereo amp. All we get with the gain both near full on both amp and pre amp is a lot of static and very quiet music behind the static.
What could course this? I'm stuck. I'm not overly clued up on turntables and pre amps etc so any advice would be great”

10 bucks says this person hooked the TT up to a line-level input on the preamp rather than the phono input.

Or the Linn may have a MC cartridge mounted, and the phono stage may only have enough juice to amp a MM cartridge.

@voltronic

bingo. that pre does have the capacity to accept medium output MC carts without a step-up. i’m sure it was plugged into a line input.
