What we may see is mass withdrawal into self and ignoring all the avoidable bad things that may now come to pass and just live in our own small lives. the cost of this is standing by while others suffer. My college yearbook quote (44 years ago):

Many of us will do what we need to do to survive, and it may very well result in putting our heads down, shutting our mouths, and minding our own business. Depending on where we live, it may save our lives.
