I am not a believer in someone having to be gay to play a gay character. I think all actors should get the same consideration. In fact, having straight people play gay characters helps to normalize gays as people, another character to be played, not some evil that must be avoided as it once was.

To me, one of the main issues is opportunity.

Trans actors struggle to get any roles, it's insulting to have the trans characters played by cis folk (especially since a lot of people see trans people as playing dress up, and this kind of casting can reinforce that).

Black actors are very rarely cast in roles that weren't specifically written as black. Same with disabled, native, etc.

And openly gay actors still struggle to get cast in ostensibly straight roles, too.

The Hallmark channel is actually kind of remarkable for inclusive casting. I know a couple of people who write for them and say they're fantastic to work with, too.
