You don't need to give awful people explanations for why you think they are awful.
You don't need to give inhuman, selfish, evil people explanations for why you think they are inhuman, selfish, and evil.
Such people don't understand what they are and even when they look at themselves (if they even do) they don't see anything except that they are wonderful and it's everyone else who is awful.
Such people have no sense of accountability and absolutely do not want to hear anyone's truth.

You don't owe anyone an explanation for your own self care. You don't need to explain your need for peace. You absolutely do not need to DEFEND your need for self care and peace to those who thrive on trying to disrupt it.
You don't need to DO anything except ... you. Do you. Focus on you so that you can be the best version of yourself FOR THE PEOPLE THAT MATTER MOST IN YOUR LIFE ... not the people who hurt you and others with their selfishness.
You don't owe those people anything.

Stop giving power to the people who make it a point to do everything they can to TAKE YOURS.
It may be hard to hear and even harder to reconcile ... but those people don't value you or even recognize you as a human being worth support, empathy, understanding or love.
These are people who probably have spent years hurting you ... abusing you ... and have no awareness of their own behavior or know and don't care. These people aren't your friends ... and that's not what family is either.
You don't owe them anything ... you owe YOU.
Contrary to popular belief ... and to 99% of the way of life for most Americans ... you weren't born into this would SOLELY to serve the selfish needs of your oppressors.
You ARE a person. You ARE an individual. You have the right to LIVE and THRIVE and pursue happiness and fulfillment without getting permission ...
If you are surrounded by people who don't believe that ... you need to get the fuck out of that mental, emotional and spiritual prison sooner rather than later.
IDEAL reading for this time in our family w/a member who creates difficult situations for multiple gens.
Mental Health is an issue, tho due to narcissistic nature MH care help seeking has never been on their table.
FULL removal of the person isn’t an option, tho we CAN &DO work to keep elder (in 90’s) insulated against it. Your thread felt empowering & helpful to read.
