1/2: Do you know why the Soviet "army" and "navy" are so ill-equipped and ill-trained? I mean aside from the graft and internal corruption.
The Soviets have spent billions of dollars over the past umpteen years on international espionage and a crazy crazy amount of international assets payroll.
They've known they're weak militarily, and so they play the longer game, the destabilization game, a much easier game against the West, a.k.a. "Team Pollyanna" and "Team Conflict Avoidance".
2/2: We were plenty warned over and over by Soviet and later Russian defectors and loads of intelligence officers and agencies, but folks either didn't want to hear it, leaving vasty swaths to fall for it, or they got bought.
Lots of groundwork got laid down in the 1990s, boosted in the 2000s, and... well, the rest is recent history and the present.
