Someone mentioned they were not able to upload a photo so I'm testing with a pic of my latest .

@tdotrob That's beautiful. About what size is it?

@Toni_Walker Thanks! It's 4.5" in the back and about 2.5" in the front because the raw piece was wedge shaped. 3" diameter IIRc.

When I get done working with code all day, I need to make something I can hold. The lathe is a lot cheaper than therapy and possibly as/more effective.

Ha! @tdotrob yes, not as expensive as therapy, and your friends and family probably enjoy any gifting.

It's a lovely piece, and I'm wondering what type of wood it is, too.

@Toni_Walker It is burl from a river birch tree my neighbors cut down last year. Having to wait a year (or more for larger pieces) for the wood to dry is teaching me patience. I could make a kiln but that seems like cheating.

@tdotrob

So, you must have several pieces drying at any given time, in preparation for the next project. Is there some shelf with all this beautiful wood just waiting to become art? And people who know of your "therapy" bring you interesting bits of wood?

Follow

@Toni_Walker Yes, but not on a shelf. This is about 2/3 of the birch burl I got from my neighbor. I have to keep turning it end for end as it dries. It has been almost a year since I took that shot and I'm only now starting to work through it. So far I've had to seek out the wood but I always make something for folks who gift it to me.

@tdotrob

So many interesting curves and textures! I look forward to seeing what you create. Keep us posted.
