This wave feels like when AOL unleashed all its users on Usenet, except instead of turning everything to crap this seems like it's making things better.

AOL? Usenet? Might be dating myself there.

@tdotrob I had three peaceful school years of Usenet before eternal September happened.

@ehurtley About the same here. Was getting it off of dial-up BBS for the first few years. I remember thinking my 1200 baud modem was badass.

@ehurtley @tdotrob People under a certain age will have to go Google “eternal September” now. Good lesson as we watch online history “rhyme.”

@tdotrob AOL = Eternal September
i still check in on usenet once in a while

@redenigma How/where do you access it? I thought it all went to archive.

@tdotrob i had Gravity (they stopped support but it worked), & went through Eternal September. it's on my other laptop so i haven't tried getting on in about 6 months... there's not much left but trolls & spam though

@redenigma That was my impression last I visited, but that was at least a decade ago. The flood of ASCII-encoded software file trading there was what got me interested in ITSecurity back in the day. Ended up making a career out of it. So, thanks Usenet, for that at least.

@tdotrob And you get a follow! Cascade war vet here. Remember the meowers? 🤣

@Lemon405 Meowers? No, that one escapes me. (Although at work there's a Git approval bot called LGTMeow which possibly makes me an unwitting meower?)
