Observation: I was looking around here at CS for about 45mins. Completely pleasant experience. Then, I went back over to twitter to scroll a bit for news and within 5mins I felt my pulse increase, my chest tighten, knot in my stomach, and a growing sense of both sadness and rage. No joke. It couldn't have been more than 5mins of twitter doom scrolling. Popped right back over here! :)
@skiphunt I agree, but I have no idea why. Maybe it is the interface. Or maybe it is just because the crazies haven't invaded here yet, hopefully they won't. It is peaceful here.
@FLDataDude @skiphunt Oh, they try now and then, but quickly run afoul of the TOS and community standards, and get splatted — usually within minutes.
Basically, if “don’t be an a-hole” is a violation of their “free speech”, they don’t belong here anyway.
@FLDataDude @skiphunt I think it is the zero tolerance of trolls and bots. They show up from time to time but get banned faster than lightning.
@skiphunt same same. I do hope we get a bit more breaking news in our feeds, but that’s all I’m really missing and now that I think about it, not even sure what source of news I’m missing. I’m sure I’m most likely missing a coso feature and could have it if i spent the time to figure it out.
@skiphunt my twitter feed is very strange compared to here. Its also full of 2-3 day old posts that I’ve already seen, some more than once. It was pleasantly devoid of ads though.
@skiphunt The difference here is palpable. I know there are people over on the bird site who haven’t created an account here, or did but didn’t take the time to get even a little bit acquainted with the CoSo community, and are convinced that we’re some kind of cult devoted to Jester.
It’s really just that people have been abused by FB and Twitter for so long now that they can’t fathom a real, healthy community taking shape online without some nefarious plot behind it.
@skiphunt
When I first joined, a naut sent me an article about dopamine. I'm not sure if this is the one, but it describes what happens to us doom scrolling on the bird app. Once we join coso our levels drop off and we calm down and no longer feel the need for the anticipation of the thrill of getting likes or retweets. We come to crave anticipating the reward of higher follower #s etc.
#s don't matter here. We interact with each other and calm down. https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/basics/dopamine
@Krysdammit thanks! So far I’m kinda here strictly for being “social”
@skiphunt
Me as well. When I joined quite a few newbies were posting a lot of political posts in the same way they would have on twitter. Someone posted an article about anticipating rewards from reactions due to dopamine.
Sorry if I offended you in any way. Just thought I'd make ppl aware of it's effect on us. I really like the vibe here and just how social a place it is. 🤗
@skiphunt same here! I seriously could not take it. Everyone saying they won't leave, they're going to stay and fight.ok, you engage in a war over a platform that never had your back. Me personally, I fight for things that matter...not some social media popularity contest. Staying on twitter engaging with terrorists isn't getting anyone any where.
@M00dyBlue here here!
@skiphunt yup. i'm sticking around the Bird site until the midterms are over at least, but i plan to continue to expand my time here and lessen it there. it's amazing how peaceful and civil things are over here.
and when i do see the occasional person that's a little too hype or aggressive for my tastes, the mute button takes care of that issue.
sweet relief.
@skiphunt quite right. i left twitville back when fElon first tweeted about buying it and my anxiety level was immediately reduced, incredible. this really is an oasis is a desert of hatred.
@skiphunt it’s horrible.
