Yyyyyeeeahhh, I’m pretty sure my job uses it as one.

We have a logistics tracking software called SAP, and higher-ups have an excel spreadsheet that they populate with data from SAP. Then there’s another spreadsheet that takes data from that spreadsheet as well as data from a spreadsheet made by the build scheduler to figure out what can and can’t be built with what we have available, and then there’s another spreadsheet…

@ketchup9080 @sjvn

That a guy uses to pull data from SAP that looks at what can be ordered from the distribution center AND what we have sitting on the line and uses that to figure out what can be built if we order all that, and then he orders that stuff…

AND THEN there’s the spreadsheet that WE use to count parts sitting on the line AND to see what ELSE can be built using parts ordered from the warehouse we have in the building which the previous guy can’t see…

@ketchup9080 @sjvn

And ALL OF THAT goes BACK to the SCHEDULER.

And they’re all on office 365, and they are constantly overwriting each other in this daily loop

AND THEN THERE’S ANOTHER ASSEMBLY LINE WITH A WHOLE DIFFERENT, OLDER SYSTEM OF SPREADSHEETS NO FUCKING REASON… wherein WE boots on the ground types have to also be the ordering person, so we have this janky spreadsheet that combines those two roles!

And I was the one who FIXED it so it actually gave the info needed to do that!

@ketchup9080 @sjvn

Everyone before me was doing that math by hand, part by part!

*inhaaaaale*

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

@ketchup9080 @sjvn

I don’t know the right way to do this but this doesn’t feel like it!

@GlytchMeister @ketchup9080 Ow. No, so no. You have my sympathy--and my recommendation you look for another job. Eventually, this is all going to end in tears and you don't want to be the IT guy they blame come that day.

@sjvn @ketchup9080

Fortunately, I’m not an IT guy, so if this rats nest of inter-spreadsheet link formulas ever blows up (which it already has to a limited extent in the recent past, it’s usually about once every few months), I’m not the one who gets blamed.
Nobody really gets blamed, actually. I think it’s because they all know it’s a clusterfuck, they’re just too lazy + resistant to change and progress to fix it.

I tell you what, tho - I won’t take a promotion that puts me in charge of this
