My knowledge of the types of cuts of pork and chicken beef is improving, albeit at a snails pace. Soooo, my mom gave me a huge piece of meat labeled simply as “pork roast.”
I’m wanting to use it to make a couple of different shredded pork fillings but the recipes call for pork butt roast. Can you tell if this 👇🏻the same thing? Photos of types of cuts, it looks like it could be sirloin pork roast.

@see_the_sus It looks like it might be either a butt or shoulder roast, the sirloin doesn't have much (if any) fat in it, where your chunk looks like it's got layers of fat throughout. Basically for shredding pork that's exactly what you want.

@see_the_sus @nonayadambidnes plus you can make shredded pork from any roast, bone in or boneless, but the shoulder is preferred because the fat adds flavor (and it ends up less "dry"). i've made shredded pork from loin roasts a few times because they were available & inexpensive

I usually have to stick with cheaper meats; ground beef/pork, pork chops, chicken because of the higher costs of the better cuts and so I end up clueless.

That’s my plan. I have a food saver that I freeze a shit load of stuff, especially fresh herbs & some veggies, (cabbage), because I can’t use up the huge amounts that are sold in the stores before they spoil.
And with my tastebuds screwed up by COVID, I’m now cooking small amounts because some times the food tastes like nothing or “off.” Or my favorite is when I’m enjoying a meal and then POOF no flavor. 😖

@see_the_sus @redenigma Oh that sucks. For awhile I was adding pesto to everything because it was one flavor I managed to be able to taste. Luckily I love it lol.

I haven't been able to figure out what spices or flavorings would help my tongue taste properly again. Sometimes even adding more salt, which I'm not a fan of, I still notice no improvement.
If the food is spicy hot, (chile), or rich, (Italian or BBQ), then most of the time it tastes good but subtler foods/beverages like some cheeses, breads, and alcoholic drinks, are typically bland.

@see_the_sus @redenigma Yes it seems to affect everyone in different ways. For me it was cinnamon, mint, oregano and pesto that got me through.

The worst part is when the sense of smell starts coming back but everything smells kinda rotten. Even that things I used to like the smell of (perfume/soap etc) now smell like there's underlying decay or mildew. It's not as bad now, but it's still there. I had to change the dishwashing liquid I use because to me it smells like mold. 🤢

What I can't figure out, is that my sense of smell still seems to be ok. At least, as far as I can tell. When I'm cooking I can smell the foods, I can still smell my perfumes, etc. But the medical articles I've read say that more often than not, a person isn't experiencing a loss of taste but a loss of smell.

@see_the_sus @redenigma It's definitely linked. I saw an experiment once where they blocked people's sense of smell, then blindfolded them and gave them different things to eat. They gave them a piece of onion and told them it was apple, then asked "How was the apple?" and people were like, "Yeah the apple is good" - they couldn't smell the onion so couldn't taste it either. I find most herbal tea doesn't taste any different than regular tea if you can't smell it either.

I get that but I can smell a-ok. I cooked up a marinara sauce & ground pork & beef last week and it smelled wonderful. I can still smell crappy car smells, my cat’s poop.

Interesting, I just found that they did a study, and it says that Covid lingers and affects the cells in your tongue and taste buds. So it may not always have to do with sense of smell for everyone. Good news is that it's probably not permanent, but it might take awhile to get back. In the meantime just enjoy the stuff you CAN taste, I guess.

I’ve had the crud twice now. The first time was July 2022 and my smell and taste went fast and a day later I tested positive. I ended up in the hospital for three days and I couldn’t taste food for almost six weeks. I got good at imagining the tastes based on how I knew it should taste.
Then I got hit with it the first week of October, a month ago. Thankfully this was much milder but the taste problem is now back. 😞
