I don't know who needs to hear this, but the civil war was fought over slavery.
Cashier asked me about my John Brown shirt & I told him who JB was. "Civil war was such a shame--should never have happened" he says. "Well, it was worth getting rid of slavery, don't you think?"
"Oh, that's not what the war was about, The north wanted to tax..."
"Yeah, I'm gonna disagree with you there" I say, and walked away.
That's what the Confederate GOVERNMENT said it was about.
@rpardee Growning up in Georgia my father always used John Brown instead of saying God damned when in mixed company. The John Brown car won't start! Well I'll be John Brown! As a kid, I had no idea who John Brown was. I'm pretty sure he wasn't using it in a complimentary way.

@rpardee My ex-husband would argue about this all night. He's wrong...but he'll still argue. I think a lot of why I left was I finally understood I could not make him a better man. He would have to do that himself.
