Apparently my org agreed to "secure delete" some data sent to us by a collaborator, including off of our backups.
My #infosec chops in this regard begin and end with DBAN. But since it's just a list of files and not an entire disk, I'm not sure how to proceed.
Any of you kind experts have advice? TIA!
@rpardee What medium are your backups on - tape or cloud?
@peterquirk heh--an excellent question. I haven't a clue at this point. My org does <3 the cloud, but I'm blissfully ignorant of the backup situation.
Maybe I should just focus on the immediate problem of ditching the files I can touch myself...
@rpardee You might want to consult with your backup vendor too. Ideally you want to restore each of the backups containing the unwanted data, delete the unwanted data on disk, then regenerate the backup. If you do differential backups it's more complicated. And if they're encrypted, it's even more complicated. You can't just destroy the backups.
