Can someone help me? What is the good faith argument to keep the Electoral College? What does it protect us against?

@Sweetteansass I recall the justification I was taught in school was to prevent the unwashed masses from electing a demagogue, b/c they couldn't be trusted to know any better. But the EC could.

The fact that the EC elected trump utterly killed any plausibility that might have had.

@rpardee @Sweetteansass It also gave more power to the slave states. I could see the unwashed masses excuse when most people were very rural and probably had no easy access to news, but that excuse hasn't flown for a very long time.

@ibid @Sweetteansass Heh--feels like we've passed through phases from:
- not enough access to trustworthy news
- enough access to trustworthy news
- trustworthy news now drowned out by a din of disinformation

So maybe there's a modern argument to be made for the EC.

No clue how you'd implement such a thing in anything like a legitimate way tho

@rpardee @Sweetteansass I was taught the same. Now that has been blown clean out of the water. Everything Trump touches dies.
