When one person says that another person is going to hell, is eternally damned, or whatever they choose to call it, this is an offense against goodness *even if* you do not believe in hell or damnation and you think the whole thing is an empty threat.

Why?

Because it opens up that person's mind and shows that they are contemplating another person's torture—and are happy about it. It's just like the people who celebrate genocide. It's more than an insult; it's an abandonment of humanity.

@DavidSalo I believe Hell is a place, but not full of fire and brimstone and demons or torture. None of this is in the description of Hell.

Hell, according to the word of God is a place where you are eternally separated from God's love.

That is only a torture to Christians who want His love, but are forever denied it. To us, it is the worst place to be, so we would think it is true of others too.

But, I look around me and wonder if Earth is Hell and if we are already cast to it, here and now.
