Tennessee is considering a bill that would bring back firing squads. One fucker in their legislature wants to amend it to include hanging from a tree. On Jelani Cobb said the real danger is not that these ppl don't know history but that they do and are *intentionally* seeking to bring back lynching. Plausible and horrifying possibility.

@publickovacs It's weird that they want to "bring back" the firing squad, which is historically regarded as a more honorable execution than hanging or other forms of capital punishment. For example, while soldiers are typically executed by firing squad, the ten war criminals sentenced to death at Nuremberg, after WWII, were sentenced to hang.

Not disputing that analysis at all. I do however believe that the issue is the history of lynching in the US as a way of performing white supremacist killings of black ppl

@publickovacs I think that's the hanging from trees proposal, which certainly harkens back to the days of strange fruit.
