As people migrate from to numerous other platforms and people become wary of properties, the need for a single-purpose directory service, detached from any social media platform, becomes more palpable. Many people joined simply so they could find old friends (but only on Facebook.) There's a real opportunity for a directory service, probably distributed & federated, where you can register one or more ways to be contacted (after approval of course.)

@peterquirk Interesting thought. I'd be interested to hear more about what you have in mind.

@peterquirk I read an article that separated 'social network' from 'social media'. The former being used to engage with other individuals. The latter being used as a crowd sourced distribution system. Seemed apt to me.

@tqwhite Yes - I saw that too. However, we still don't have anything that replaces the white pages for phone numbers and addresses. If you want to contact someone from your past who is not on LinkedIn, there's no universal way to find phone numbers, email addresses, Skype/Signal/Telegram handles, social media handles, blogs, etc.. I would happily register some basic contact with a global directory service that gave me control over how much was revealed and to whom.
