October 1, 1868—John Mercer Langston organizes the nation’s first Black law school at Howard University in Washington, D.C. Largely forgotten today, Langston was a major Black political figure during his day. He was one of the nation’s first African-American lawyers, elected political officials and he influenced Black education throughout the country. The town of Langston, Oklahoma is named in his honor.

October 2, 1935 ~ Robert Henry Lawrence Jr., a United States Air Force officer and the first African-American astronaut was born. He was also a test pilot and senior United States Air Force pilot with over 2,500 flight hours.

October 4, 1951 ~ after treatment in Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Henrietta Lacks dies from cervical cancer, however, her cells did not die.

October 6, 1971 ~ The first legal interracial marriage takes place in North Carolina. A Black man, John Wilkinson, marries a White woman, Lorraine Mary Turner. The marriage came a few years after the 1967 U.S. Supreme Court ruling in Loving v. Virginia, that ruled legal barriers to interracial marriage, which existed in most Southern states, were unconstitutional.

October 13, 1914 ~ Garret Morgan, an African-American inventor and community leader, invents and patents the gas mask. He is renowned for a heroic rescue in 1916 in which he and three others used the mask he’d developed to save workers trapped within a water intake tunnel, 50 feet beneath Lake Erie. Morgan also patented the traffic signal.

October 16, 1895 ~ The nation’s leading African American medical group—National Medical Association—is founded in Atlanta, Ga
It was created by twelve black doctors at the Cotton States and International Exposition in Atlanta. Robert F. Boyd was the organization’s first president. The organization’s mission was to combat racism and segregation in the medical field, both for medical professions and their patients.

October 18, 1945—Actor, athlete, singer, activist and socialist Paul Robeson receives the NAACP’s prestigious Spingarn Medal for his artistic achievements. Robeson would be hounded by the U.S. government because of his leftist leanings. He was labeled a communist, blocked from working in America and later denied a passport so he could not travel to Europe to work.
@nursefrombirth please clarify, this ruling pertains to Black interracial, not other interracial?
@JanetZumba_FalPals I'll have to clarify but I believe it is all interracial. I believe there were some "recognized" interracial marriages in NC prior to this, however I'm not sure they were considered "legal" by the state.
@nursefrombirth back in SanFrancisco, there were many half-Japanese children, such as myself. This was "a thing" because US Army men stationed in Japan sometimes married Japanese women and then later transferred to the beautiful Army base in San Francisco. My parents were married in Japan before that year.
Louisiana has had "creole" mixture for quite awhile.

October 3, 1974 ~ Frank Robinson named manager of the Cleveland Indians and became the first Black manager in the major leagues. Robinson's legendary career included MVP awards in both the National and American Leagues, 586 home runs, Triple Crown Winner, six time all-star, World Series Champion, and induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame.
