The FACE of the Leprosy Outbreak!
After A Measles Outbreak, Florida Sees Leprosy Cases Spike To Highest In The Nation
The transmission of leprosy occurs through respiratory droplets, often through close and prolonged contact with untreated individuals who have the active form of the disease. However, leprosy is not highly contagious, and the majority of individuals exposed to the bacterium do not develop the disease.
@nursefrombirth I agree it is something I thought I’d never see return to the USA. I taught microbiology for a long time and my students were fascinated with the details of the disease - how the bacteria that cause it prefer the cooler parts of the body. Luckily there are antibiotics to treat as well Hansen’s Disease… maybe 2 or 3 different ones? I believe it’s difficult it is to actually transmit the disease. I think people have to be genetically susceptible and have long term contact??
