FDA approves first ever DNA test to help screen for risk of opioid use disorder

The FDA approved the AutoGenomics AvertD test for use among adults who are considering treating acute pain with short-term prescription of opioid pain medicine, such as after a planned surgery.

The test is not intended to be used by patients being treated for chronic pain. The information from the test may help patients make better informed decisions, the FDA said.

@nursefrombirth There is surely a genetic component for OUD. I had a badly broken leg with an external fixator implanted for 4 months. I was given morphine in the hospital for a week &then switched to pill form for the duration. I never felt an urge to use it for anything but pain. I easily stopped once the fixator was out& the wounds healed. During the same time our daughter started taking opioids from a pill mill in Florida. She has been struggling to stay off of them for nearly 20 years. 😞
