14-year-old Invents Soap for Treating Skin Cancer and Wins Top Honor as Americaβs Top Young Scientist
Heman Bekele, a 9th grader at W.T. Woodson High School in Annandale, VA, was awarded the $25,000 grand prize as the winner of the 2023 3M Young Scientist Challenge, with a melanoma treatment in the form of a bar of soap.
@nursefrombirth Uhhh... for something like that, I think $25k is a shitty prize. Add an extra 0 to that payout there bubbas!
@GrumpyWolf I agree. It's estimated that we spend 8.1 billion annually on treatment for skin cancer. I'd say another 0 or a few more 0's would be appropriate. π€
@nursefrombirth Just amazing.
Heβs an insightful, creative thinker! And his solution is so simple, yet elegant.
@nursefrombirth This is wonderful. I just hope it doesn't turn get bought up by some Corp and then cost a thousand bucks for each bar of soap or something like that.
@nursefrombirth what an inspiration!β€οΈ
TIME and TIME for Kids Name the 2024 Kid of the Year: 15-Year-Old Scientist Heman Bekele
Bekele tells TIME: βIβm really passionate about skin-cancer researchβ¦. whether itβs my own research or whatβs happening in the field. Itβs absolutely incredible to think that one day my bar of soap will be able to make a direct impact on somebody elseβs life. Thatβs the reason I started this all in the first place.β
