I absolutely *love* rats as pets; they're smart, and sweet little things; my only complaint being their maximum lifespan is 36 months :(

fancy rat females can live a long life, but not like a dog
now
gambian pouched rats can live 7 years or more
but maybe smarter than dogs
they can clear mine fields
