Guy Carawan, American folk musician and musicologist, who introduced the protest song "We Shall Overcome" to the American Civil Rights Movement, was born on July 28, 1927 (d. 2015).

According to Wikipedia, Carawan taught the song to the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) in 1960.
