#CancelTheNYT has been a long used hashtag of mine.
#CancelTheWaPo starts today.
The world expects that all good people will do their duty.
@ReneeVoiceBrand Any particular reasons we should know?
@ReneeVoiceBrand Ah, never mind. I see it.
The move follows one by my former colleague Mariel Garza, who resigned on Wednesday from her position as the editorials editor at the Los Angeles Times in protest of a decision by Patrick Soon-Shiong, the publisher, to block the editorial boardโs plan to endorse Harris. The Times did not make presidential endorsements from 1976 through 2004 but resumed the practice in 2008 and endorsed Democrats in the past four elections.
I cancelled my NYT's at the end of 2023.
@mikeharmanos What's the impetus this time? I'm out of things today..
@TrueBloodNet No presidential endorsement for the first time sinceโฆ 1988? They were going to endorse the VP, but Bezos killed it.
@mikeharmanos Ah.. yeah I agree that's wrong. Thanks for the 411. Although the fact that they were going to endorse Harris is almost as good and in some ways better than actually endorsing her. It reminds us that the ultra rich are trying to shove tfg down our throats.
@TrueBloodNet Or the ultra rich are taking away the opportunity to endorse? Your call.
Money quote: Martin Baron, who edited the Post from 2012 to 2021, winning wide acclaim for his leadership of the newsroom during the Trump presidency, issued a statement to NPR denouncing the last-minute decision to withhold an endorsement. โThis is cowardice, a moment of darkness that will leave democracy as a casualty,โ he said. 1/2
โDonald Trump will celebrate this as an invitation to further intimidate the Postโs owner, Jeff Bezos (and other media owners). History will mark a disturbing chapter of spinelessness at an institution famed for courage.โ
