Having an argudebatement with a coworker;
Fantasy universe vs Modern military, who wins?

I said the ground rules need to be a tiered level of capabilities on either side.

If you say old fashioned medieval fantasy, I say WW1 armies. If it's more traditional understanding, then WW2 armies...but he wants the full shebang modern military, so I say that means the most robust understandings we have of fantasy creatures, like prismatic dragons and magicians with precognitive spells.

So, who wins?

@lacuda If you're using D&D rules, the fantasy army would be screwed. A dragon flies about as fast as a Honda.

The divination spells that precognate give vague, unhelpful, and often incorrect answers, whereas satellites work pretty good.

The range of much military hardware is in miles or even hundreds or thousands of miles. Long-range spells typically have a range of about 500 feet.

Tolkien fantasy? Even worse. Yeah, those folks would be toast.

@AskTheDevil
My position is that if you put in the long range "they're dead before they even see you coming" high tech weaponry, you gotta be willing to compromise with undead dragons, curses, long range magic, remote viewing spells, mind control. If you even just pit the Skyrim universe against a modern army, Alduin solos. Lord of the Rings has a ghost army that I'm fairly certain no bullet could dent. A hobbit with the One True Ring could sneak right into the Pentagon lol.

@AskTheDevil or worse yet, they could drop that ring off at the White House and watch the country collapse in on itself πŸ˜…
