My Comic Reading Journey - August 2024

Finally caught up on Tom Taylor's run on Titans by reading the Beast World event. I loved the event and the book overall, but I'm starting to notice a trend in the big two when it comes to event comics. All the stories now-a-days are built up in these event crossover comics, relegating the main books to just either be fallout from an event or buildup to an event, never having the time to tell there own isolated stories.

I really wish they would take a break from events for just a year, because it is really tiring to get invested in a book only for it to be interrupted by an event.

I did start reading some more indie material this month (other than Red Sonja and Vampirella), my favorite of which has to be A Vicious Circle by Mattson Tomlin and Lee Bermejo. The writing and artwork in that book is so good, I can see why there is a year between releases for new issues of that.

I finally caught up with Christopher Priest's run on Vampirella, and honestly I'm starting to get fatigued by his writing in that book. The book is in desperate need for a shakeup with a new creative team. I do like that they switched over to the legacy numbering for her, making the character feel more iconic.

The new Red Sonja run on the other hand in just getting better and better with each issue. It actually inspired me to go back and try to get into some past Red Sonja runs that I couldn't get into the first time around. Like Sonjaversal, and while the first 6 issues were meh, the last 6 issues I enjoyed a lot. So much so that I read Hell Sonja and it's sequel Red Sonja/Hell Sonja. Just such an interesting take on the character, and an interesting take on multiverse stories.
