There are people whose only understanding of success is convincing themselves that someone else is actually a failure.

I keep thinking of Isaac Newton, who had nothing he needed to prove to anyone, spending twenty years ragging on Leibniz for having actually PUBLISHED stuff about calculus, while Newton kept it all in a drawer.

I think that condition is correlated with people that have experienced loss or lack of attention.
Bitterness, when seeded in a young mind, is a difficult weed to pull.
