I've set up accounts on three social media sites to replace Twitter.
CoSo is the clear winner but I need to find a way to attract more journalists and researchers to join for it to be an effective replacement.
Post.news is fine for news updates, but it's funded by Mark Andreesen, who isn't all that different from Musk and indeed helped ($) Musk buy Twitter.
Spoutible is problematic harassment-wise and I only set up an account there to prevent someone else from spoofing me.
@jjmacnab
I semi-regularly contact ppl whose work is important to me to tell them why I've chosen CoSo & they should, too (w/a link to that Zdnet article that called it the best).
They DO have to open their minds to a non-viral universe. It's a change; wrapping the mind around a place where one may get a few dozen likes instead of a few 100k can probably feel like the same amount of work but no one really paying attention.
But, the network effect = more ppl, more everything else....
@jjmacnab
I wish more journalists would come here too. When I see agencies STAYING on #Twitter, even now, it frustrates me.
I think some ppl use post as little more than a place to CC their substack links. Then why not take an extra minute & copy that post HERE too?
Is there any posting tool, that includes also posting to HERE, as well as other sites? I wonder if the privacy & #security features of #CoSo would block that.
Oh, and here's andreesen being an asshole:
@jjmacnab same here! I'd like to see Seth Cotlar posting here.
@jjmacnab A bunch of journalists are on Mastodon. I'd rather the "broadcasters" not flood CoSo, it's way too nice and friendly and interactive. I have a "news" column on Masto, and that fills in what our best news sources: @TheNewsOwl/@WhiteRose and @WeThePeople and @BreakingNews don't aggregate, although they cover most of the bases for me.
@jjmacnab I’m not a journalist, but I too miss the access to journalists in one place. I tried post, so far meh. I DO love CoSo for it’s very different vibe/flavor, and I can get breaking news here as fast as I did on #twitter. What I miss is seeing the thoughts of journalists along with the links to what they published. Also: really (!!!) happy you are here, one of the ones I was was sad to leave when i bailed on birdapp.
@jjmacnab how is spout? I was on the early sign up, set something up, not sure how it went
@jjmacnab All the best encouraging good journalists to come here. They are needed.
@jjmacnab This might be an unpopular opinion, but I kind of like the fact that all the journalists and more well known people are not here - clogging up the feed. I like this little community of nobodies! 😉
