The foods which have the worst environmental impact, ranked.
Beef, to no oneโs surprise is #1. But dark chocolate is #2? Color me surprised.

Great point. Maybe we have to modify farming practices to off set carbon release.
@evamarie I call shenanigans. ALL meat and cheese is worse than cocoa. Coffee and tea is worse than cocoa. And when they say chocolate - a lot of the damage is caused by SUGAR which is awful for the environment. Even in this scientific paper, the sugary drinks are underestimated because this is done per 100 g and the impact is diluted by high water content. Also, even this source lumps all veggies together and corn is horrible for the environment and rice isn't much better.
@evamarie Wow, Dark Chocolate?! How am I to go on?!
I know. Itโs knowledge I could do without ๐
@evamarie I got so depressed that I had to eat some dark chocolate
@evamarie I think the problem is farming practices, not the foods themselves. For examples, there have been studies done on local pasture raised cattle farms, and they have zero impact on the environment, at worst. The grass in the pastures absorbs and uses all the methane and carbon dioxide the cows emit, then more grass grows and provides oxygen for the environment and food for the cows. I imagine itโs the same for chocolate. The farming practices have to be sound, sustainable, and fair.
