Hive mind: What top misconceptions have you encountered regarding migrating workloads to ?

I have someone writing a "common migration misconceptions" article, because it's always a good idea to clear out the readers' wrong assumptions before you impart advice.

What do you wish you knew earlier about migration strategies or practicalities? Or, what do you wish everybody understood so you wouldn't have to explain it AGAIN? (Details, please!)

@estherschindler tough topic for 480 characters. Size as best you can up front to evaluate cost, determine risk of lift and shift compared to optimize day one as part of transition planning. Cloud/opex means technical staff has to be financially aware and accountable. A cattle not pets foundation makes management over time much easier. Limit who has rights to create to avoid sprawl. Establish standards so everyone knows what tools are ok to use.

@fuse I'm happy to give you an email ID via DM for a longer response!

But note that I'm looking for the MISCONCEPTIONS here, not the "what you should do" advice.

@estherschindler hmmm
Cloud is cheap
Cloud is easy
Cloud doesn’t require technical expertise
Cloud is anything other than a consumption model choice

Cloud is easy to misunderstand and have an opinion on. I hope the real thrust of your article is offering to clarify misconceptions.

Happy to help further if I can.
